APPLE CIDER PRESS

In colonial days, farmers and families often used a barreled press to make their own apple cider. East students were able to experience this process this week. Each student placed an apple into the hopper (grinder) and turned the cast iron wheel to grind the apple into a pulp. This pulp was then put into a barrel and pressed until all the juice was squeezed out. Then students were able to try their very own homemade, pure apple juice, straight from a 100 year old apple press.

Special thanks to Trask River High School for loaning us their apple press and Fred Meyer for donating 300 apples!

5TH GRADE SCIENCE FIELD TRIP

This past Wednesday and Thursday 5th grade students had the opportunity to learn about cells and ecosystems found in Netarts Bay. The in-house field trip consisted of four stations led by local high school students in the Natural Resource Program as well as Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (Watershed, Estuary, Beach & Sea). Stations included oysters and how we grow them on the Oregon Coast, crab dissection, a close up look at organisms found in bay water using microscopes, and small samples of bay water where students examined food webs found. Although students were not physically right next to Netarts Bay for this field trip, students enjoyed themselves and were able to take an in-depth look at one of the amazing ecosystems we live close to in Tillamook.
